What Level Card Maker Are You? — And Why It Matters For Your Craft Journey

What Level Card Maker Are You? — And Why It Matters For Your Craft Journey

If you have ever scrolled through a card making shop and felt either completely overwhelmed or a little under-challenged, there is a reason for that. Not all card making projects are created equal, and not all supply lists are built for the same person. Find your card making level here.

At Crafts on the Move we organize everything around three card making levels. Not to put you in a box. But to help you start where you are, build your confidence, and grow at your own pace.

Here is how to figure out exactly where you land right now.

Level 1 — The Curious Beginner

Ask yourself:

  • Are you brand new to card making or just getting back into it after a long break?
  • Is your supply collection small, maybe some basic cardstock, scissors, and adhesive?
  • Do you feel excited but a little overwhelmed when you look at more complex projects?
  • Do you feel most comfortable with clear, step by step guidance?

If you nodded at most of those, you are a Level 1 card maker. And that is a great place to be.

Level 1 cards are clean, simple, and beautiful in their own right. Think a single stamped image on a card base with a sentiment and a ribbon. No die cutting machine required. No ink blending. Just approachable card making that builds your confidence one project at a time.

What you need: A good card base, basic adhesive, a few simple stamps, and an ink pad. That is genuinely all it takes to make cards you will be proud to give.

Your next step: Learn the basics of cardstock weight, scoring, and simple layouts. Every advanced card maker started exactly where you are right now.

Level 2 — The Emerging Card Maker

Ask yourself:

  • Have you been making cards for a while and feel comfortable with the basics?
  • Do you own a paper trimmer and maybe a die cutting machine?
  • Have you tried layering, basic ink blending, or simple die cuts?
  • Are you ready to push yourself creatively but do not want to feel overwhelmed?

If that sounds like you, welcome to Level 2.

Level 2 cards show more personality and dimension. Think layered cardstock panels, ink blended backgrounds, and more intentional layouts. These cards take a little more time and a few more supplies, but the results are noticeably more impressive and deeply satisfying to make.

What you need: A die cutting machine opens up a whole new world at this level. Ink blending tools, a growing stamp collection, and a set of dies will serve you well here.

Your next step: Start experimenting with technique combinations. Try pairing ink blending with die cutting. Play with color and contrast. This is where card making starts to feel less like following instructions and more like expressing yourself.

Level 3 — The Seasoned Card Maker

Ask yourself:

  • Have you been making cards for several years and feel genuinely confident at your craft table?
  • Is your craft room well stocked with dies, stamps, inks, embossing tools, and specialty papers?
  • Do you love complex techniques like fancy folds, heat embossing, and intricate die cutting?
  • Are you always looking for your next creative challenge?

If you are nodding, you are a Level 3 card maker.

Level 3 cards are show stoppers. Think intricate die cut layers, heat embossed details, mixed media backgrounds, and specialty techniques that make people ask "how did you make that?" These cards take skill, patience, and a well stocked craft room, and the process of making them is just as satisfying as the finished result.

What you need: You likely already have most of it. Level 3 is less about acquiring new tools and more about finding fresh inspiration, challenging yourself creatively, and learning how to mix and match products.

Your next step: Try a technique you have never attempted. Teach someone else what you know. And if you are ready for a community of like-minded card makers who share your passion and can inspire your next project, Card Maker's Corner, mixed media for card makers, was built for you.
