Faux Stained Glass — A Technique Born at Crafts on the Move

Andrea developed a really cool and easy to replicate technique right here at Crafts on the Move, and she is coining it Faux Stained Glass. The result is a card with rich translucent color, defined outlines, and a depth that stops people in their tracks.

What You Will Need:

The technique requires a few specific supplies to achieve the stained glass effect:

The January 2026 BetterPress Society Plate of the Month was featured in the original tutorial. The good news is that this technique works beautifully with a wide variety of BetterPress and Glimmer plates — the sky is the limit on what you can create.

About the Technique

Faux stained glass replicates the look of traditional stained glass using paper crafting supplies. The Glimmer Specialty Clear Film is non negotiable for this technique — standard acetate will not give you the same result. The combination of foil, film, and the right plate creates translucent color and defined outlines that are unlike anything else in card making.

This technique is hard to replicate with alcohol inks and markers. The specific combination of supplies is what makes the effect work.
